Walking All the Way Around the Earth
Earth's circumference at the equator is 24,901 miles — a number that sounds almost reasonable until you try to picture walking it. At this site's standard conversion rate, that comes out to roughly 54.8 million steps: more steps than most people take in ten years of ordinary daily life, compressed into a single hypothetical walk.
The 24,901-mile figure is specifically the equatorial circumference — Earth bulges slightly at the equator due to its rotation, so a walk around the poles (the "meridional" circumference) is a little shorter, at 24,860 miles. Either way, you're rounding to the same order of magnitude: a walk that no one has ever actually completed in a single unbroken line, because roughly 70% of the planet's surface is ocean, and neither circumference route stays on dry land for anywhere close to the full distance.
The 346-day estimate above assumes something no real walk could sustain: 3 miles per hour, every hour, for 24 hours a day, with zero rest, zero sleep, zero food stops, and a fully paved, dry, flat surface the entire way — plus, implicitly, the ability to walk directly across every ocean in your path. It's a clean math exercise, not a plan. A real circumnavigation on foot — and a handful of people have attempted versions of one — takes years, not months, and requires boats or planes for the ocean crossings, which somewhat defeats the "walking" part of the achievement.
For scale: the Great Wall of China's full surveyed length, at 21,196 kilometers, covers just over half this distance. Everest's height, by contrast, barely registers — you'd need to stack roughly 4,500 Everests on top of each other to match the Earth's circumference, a comparison that says more about how differently our brains process "tall" versus "far" than it does about either number.
The ancient Greek scholar Eratosthenes calculated Earth's circumference around 240 BCE using nothing but the angle of shadows in two Egyptian cities and some careful geometry, landing within a few percent of the modern GPS-measured figure — one of the more startling feats of ancient science, achieved roughly two thousand years before satellites existed to check his work.
