How to Measure Your Stride Length (and Why It Changes Everything)
Every step calculator, including this one, converts distance into steps by dividing by a stride length. Get that number wrong and every figure downstream is wrong by the same proportion. It is the most consequential input in the entire calculation and the one almost nobody checks.
Stride, step, and the terminology problem
Two words are used inconsistently, including by manufacturers, which is the source of a lot of confusion.
- Step length is the distance from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other — a single pace.
- Stride length, in gait analysis, is a full cycle: heel strike of one foot to the next heel strike of the same foot. It is two steps, and roughly twice the step length.
In consumer fitness devices and most step calculators, "stride length" almost always means step length — the single-pace figure. This site uses it in that consumer sense throughout, because that is what every device you might compare against does. If you feed a true gait-analysis stride into a fitness tracker, your distances will come out double.
The default is 0.75 metres, and it is probably wrong for you
Most calculators default to somewhere between 0.74 and 0.79 metres, or about two and a half feet. That figure comes from averaging adult populations, and like most averages it describes very few individuals.
The standard estimate is that walking step length is roughly 0.41 to 0.45 times your height. Here is what that produces:

The spread is 27 per cent between the shortest and tallest rows. Two people walking the same route side by side, both using an accurate device, will legitimately record step counts differing by a quarter. Neither is broken.
How to measure yours properly
Five minutes and a tape measure will beat any estimate.
- Find a known distance. A running track straight is 100 metres. A quiet street with a measured stretch works. Longer is better; anything under 20 metres will amplify counting errors.
- Start moving before the line. Begin walking at least ten metres before your start point so you are at normal walking speed when you begin counting. Accelerating from standstill produces short, unrepresentative steps.
- Count every foot strike from the start line to the end line. Counting only left feet and doubling is easier over long distances and just as accurate.
- Divide. Distance in metres divided by step count equals your step length. Over 100 metres, 140 steps gives 0.71 m.
- Repeat three times and average. Individual runs vary by a few per cent. Three passes gets you close to your true habitual value.
Measure at your real pace
The most common error is measuring at an unnaturally brisk pace because you are concentrating. Step length increases substantially with speed — by 20 per cent or more between a stroll and a fast walk. Measure at the pace you actually walk when you are not thinking about it, or your daily totals will read low.
What else moves the number
Stride is not a fixed personal constant. It shifts with conditions, and the shifts are large enough to matter:
- Speed. The dominant factor after height. Faster walking means longer steps and a higher cadence simultaneously.
- Gradient. Uphill walking shortens step length noticeably; downhill lengthens it. On a steep climb the reduction can exceed 20 per cent.
- Surface. Loose sand, gravel, snow and cobblestone all shorten stride. Sand is the extreme case, commonly cutting step length by around 10 per cent.
- Load. Carrying a heavy pack shortens step length and raises cadence.
- Age. Step length tends to decline gradually through later adulthood, and it is one of the more reliable indicators used in clinical gait assessment.
- Footwear. Modest but real. Stiff-soled and heeled shoes alter gait mechanics enough to shift the number a few per cent.
Where to set it
Every major fitness platform lets you enter a custom stride, usually buried in profile or workout settings, and often with separate values for walking and running. It is worth the two minutes. If you use the step calculator on this site, the height selector applies the same 0.414 coefficient described above — which is better than a flat default, but still an estimate. If you have measured your own, use that instead.
The broader point is that a step is not a unit of distance. It is a unit of your particular body doing a particular thing on a particular surface. Any conversion between steps and miles is an approximation, and knowing the size of your own error is most of what accuracy means here.
Common questions
What is the average stride length?
For walking, roughly 0.70 to 0.79 metres of step length for adults, or about 0.41 to 0.45 times height. Women's average is somewhat shorter than men's, primarily because of the height difference.
How many steps are in a mile?
Between about 2,000 and 2,600 depending on your height and pace. The commonly quoted 2,000 assumes a step length near 0.8 metres, which suits taller walkers or brisk walking.
Should I use stride length or step length in my tracker?
Almost every consumer device labels the single-pace figure as stride length. Enter the distance between one heel strike and the next, not the full two-step gait cycle.
